ABOUT PURE SQUID

Origin Distribution:

Peruvian squid (scientific name: Dosidicus gigas, commonly known as Peruvian giant squid) is mainly distributed in the tropical to subtropical waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean. Its core producing areas are concentrated in the offshore waters of Peru and Chile (between 10°S and 40°S latitude). This region is influenced by the Peru Current, where seawater is rich in plankton, providing abundant bait for squid and forming the world’s densest resource belt of Peruvian squid. In addition, there is a small distribution in the southern offshore waters of Ecuador and the western offshore waters of Colombia, but the yield and quality of squid from Peruvian offshore waters are the best, making it the main global supply source of Peruvian squid.

Main Fishing Methods:

1. Light Purse Seine Fishing: Taking advantage of the phototaxis of Peruvian squid, high-power fish-attracting lights equipped on fishing boats are used to attract squid to gather at night, and then purse seines are used to quickly surround and catch them. The single catch can reach dozens of tons, which is suitable for large-scale commercial fishing. It has high fishing efficiency and can accurately catch adult squid (with a weight of 5-20kg), reducing the by-catch of juvenile squid.

2. Angling: Divided into hand angling and machine angling, it uses luminous hooks that simulate squid bait to attract squid to take the bait. The squid caught by angling has high integrity and little damage, which is mostly used in scenarios pursuing high-quality single products. However, the catch volume is small and the cost is higher than that of purse seine fishing, so it is currently only used as a supplementary fishing method.

Stable & Large-Scale Yield：China’s ocean-going fishing fleet ranks among the world’s largest, with over 2,600 operating vessels and wide coverage. A large number of vessels are deployed for Peruvian squid fishing, ensuring stable yields. Abundant squid resources (dozens of tons per vessel per night in peak season) also guarantee sufficient catches for stable domestic supply.
