ABOUT BALCK SQUID
The origin of the name "black squid" lies in the fact that, when alive or fresh, its body surface often takes on a relatively dark color—such as dark brown, purplish black, or near-black. This is related to the pigment cells in its epidermis, particularly the pigment distribution associated with the ink sac. This striking dark appearance serves as its most intuitive identifying feature, hence it is commonly referred to as "black squid" to distinguish it from other squid species with lighter body colors (e.g., some squids with grayish-white or light brown bodies).
Differences in nutritional value between black squid and other squid species
Black squid (usually referring to darker-colored squid species such as Symplectoteuthis oualaniensis) and common squid (such as Todarodes pacificus and Loligo) are generally similar in nutritional value. Both are high-quality seafood rich in protein and low in fat. However, due to differences in species and growing environments, there are slight variations in some nutrients, mainly reflected in the following aspects:
1.The proportion of unsaturated fatty acids in black squid may be slightly higher, especially the content of DHA. This is because some black squid live in deep or cold waters, and to adapt to the environment, they accumulate more Omega-3 fatty acids (including DHA and EPA) in their bodies.
2.Black squid may have a higher iron content. This is because the pigment cells in their dark-colored body surface may be accompanied by more iron-related compounds (such as heme analogs), which are more beneficial for preventing iron-deficiency anemia.
3.Black squid may contain more vitamin A precursors (carotenoids). This is because the pigments in their dark-colored body surface may include β-carotene, while common squid, with lighter body colors, contain relatively fewer such components.
